A Pressing Issue: More Moving Episodes

By: Alex Scofield

When I moved last week, the damage toll included my coffee pot and several ceramic bowls.

Another hangup didn’t involve shattered glass, or so I hope — I couldn’t find either of my two French presses in storage.  We had stored most of our belongings since we moved from the Washington, D.C. area at the end of ‘07, and even now in a new home on Cape Cod, many of our possessions remain in storage.  (Yes, economy-trackers, we’ve downsized!)

The bread-maker?  Found it.

The roasting pan that can hold a 73-pound turkey?  Found it.

The cheese knives with jolly human figurines on the handles?  Found ‘em.

But I searched in vain through boxes of kitchen utensils and appliances, in hopes of finding my French presses.  For the time being, I have given up the hunt.

The French press is my favorite brewing method.  When I get top-quality beans, the press is absolutely the way to go.  It delivers a much truer taste of the bean than the usual drip-pot, and I don’t mind the sediment in the least.   Bring it on.  In D.C., I had two presses  — one for home, and one at my office.  Sadly, in the 18 months since I moved to Cape Cod, I haven’t made French-pressed coffee even once.  I’ve found several Cape-area roasters I love, but I’m missing out on the best way to experience their coffee, and my coffee-blogging credentials are slowly evaporating in the process.

I am confronted with a dilemma — Do I buy another French press, knowing I have two somewhere in storage, or do I wait until that indefinite day when I find mine?

On principle, I don’t want to spend money unnecessarily, on something I already have.  But it could be a long time, upwards of a year, before I find my pair of presses.  After 18 months without a French press, has the time come to suck it up and buy a third one?

  • 18 months without your favorite brewing method? Are you mad? Buy a new one.

Ironically, the act of buying a new press pot will actually help you find the other two. The 3rd press pot is like the key to the secret location of the other two.

  • I agree, it’s definitely time to buy a new one. I’m on the verge of buying a french press myself, just trying to figure out which one I really want.
