Local Ice Cream Makers Teaming Up With Local Coffee Roasters

By: Michael Allen Smith

Last summer while visiting my hometown of Columbus, I had some excellent coffee ice cream.  The ice cream shop was Jeni’s and they used coffee roasted from the local Stauf’s Coffee Roasters.  From Jeni’s Signature Flavors:

Black Coffee: Cream steeped with just-roasted coffee from Stauf’s, a local roaster. No water — which makes our coffee ice cream rich and dark, not icy and bitter. It tastes the way coffee smells.

I had completely forgotten about my Columbus coffee ice cream experience until last weekend.  Seattle has an equal to Jeni’s called Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream.  While in line I noticed they also teamed up with a local coffee roaster for their coffee ice cream too.  Molly offers Vivace Coffee, which uses coffee from Espresso Vivace.  It was yummy!

Does your town have a local artisan ice cream maker that has teamed up with a local coffee roaster to make an outstanding coffee ice cream?  Tell us about it in the comments.  It is summer time, which means it is time for coffee ice cream.

  • There’s a couple of good local ice cream places near me, but neither of them have anything like that. They might need some subtle hints because that ice cream looks and sounds delicious.

  • Sounds great and interesting technique for extracting coffee flavor. Know anything more about the approach? How much coffee and is it steeped hot or cold?

Bi-Rite in San Francisco used Ritual’s coffee for it’s coffee ice cream. I’m not sure if they’ve offered coffee, but Ici in Berkeley serves affogatos with Blue Bottle. And Sketch, also in Berkeley, appears to now serve Barefoot coffee – not sure if it’s used in the ice cream.

  • Thanks for the love, Michael.

    Columbus misses you :)

    Cheers.

  • Christian – I don’t know much about the technique, but thank you for posting the SAN FRAN tips.
