Caffeinated Sins in Phuket, Thailand
Yesterday I mentioned that arrived at the Phuket, Thailand Starbucks at 7 AM only to learn they wouldn’t wake their sleepy heads for another 2 hours. I still needed my coffee. Then a dark thought entered my head and I knew exactly what I had to do. Just like when I visited Montevideo, Uruguay in 2006, I knew there was only one place to get coffee this early.
Yes, the Coffee Hero went to McDonalds.

It was just 2 weeks earlier that I was sipping an Ethiopian Harrar Makeda Longberry Single Origin Espresso from Victrola Coffee in Seattle. Now I was entering McCafe. Ah the sins of Thailand. In my defense, I had no option. Bangkok had options, Patong Beach had McDonalds. I turned out to be the only customer they had in the 7 AM hour.
Having been burned by so many awful espressos since arriving in Thailand, I ordered an Americano or as this McCafe calls it, the Long Black. Maybe it was my super low expectations or the fact McDonalds was the only one that was able to lift my tired haze, but I found the quality to be OK. Unlike Starbucks, which has worse quality overseas, I found the McCafe in both Uruguay and Thailand to be superior to the quality of the McCafe in Seattle (Ballard).

Can you see what closed coffee shop is in the background? Answer below.
Thailand is cheap when it comes to food and lodging. It is not cheap when it comes to coffee. In fact, an Americano (aka Long Black) at the McCafe in Phuket was about $3 USD. Over the course of 3 mornings, I spent more money on McCafe coffee than I did food the rest of the day. The shame!

I can’t believe you went to McDonald’s. That’s like something I would do! I also can’t believe that they have actual mugs over there. That would be good to change the McCafe reputation over here, or at least a start.

I actually really liked the coffee in Thailand, but I never had any at Starbucks or McDonald’s. I don’t know why you would go to places like that when you’re in such an exotic place. I much rather go to local spots, where the coffee is fresh and strong:) Now Vietnamese coffee, that’s where it’s at! Best coffee ever!

It is shocking to me that the Mcdonald’s is better quality than Starbucks. I love the picture btw.
