Coffee From Honey Bean Coffee
By: Ryan Jacobs
I recently had the opportunity to sample an offering from Honey Bean Coffee, located in Lexington, KY.
In full disclosure, the coffee reviewed was provided to me by Honey Bean Coffee.
Roaster’s Select (3.5/5)
The coffee arrived in a sealed plastic bag with a one-way valve on it. The seal was quite good on the bag since I could not smell any coffee aroma until I opened it. From a freshness perspective, this was a very good sign to me. Packaging is very important with freshly roasted coffee especially when delivering by mail. They did a very good job with this sample.
The blend itself is a viennese roasted coffee which is described on their website as having ‘Slightly smoky sharpness’. Typically, when I see coffee that is a dark roast and described as being smoky, I prepare myself for coffee that is burnt.
I prepared the coffee using a pour-over drip filter cone and was pleasantly surprised to find that the coffee was pretty much as described. It was indeed smoky and complex. More importantly to me, it did not taste burnt or stale. The bright notes of the coffee lingered on the palate as a result of the depth and body of the blend. Roaster’s select was a very enjoyable coffee.

I recently received two coffees from Honey Bean. I think it was the Vanilla Hazelnut, that I’ve tried so far. I really enjoyed it. I have the Roaster’s Select to try later this week.
