Coffee City Visits Columbus, Ohio

By: Michael Allen Smith

This morning I read the latest post by Melissa Allison who writes the Coffee City column for The Seattle Times.  It was about her trip to my hometown of Columbus, Ohio.  This is where my coffee roots began.  From the article Coffee wrap-up for the weekend:

My recent trip east was delayed by a storm, but eventually I made it to Columbus, Ohio, where Cup O Joe is still the most happening coffee shop in German Village. Its coffee is roasted locally by Stauf’s Coffee Roasters in Grandview, which now owns Cup O Joe, according to my barista that night, Randy Niemi.

If I had to pick a birthplace of where I went from not liking coffee to liking coffee, it would be Stauf’s Coffee Roasters. Back in college I adored their dark roasted blends.  I delivered pizzas and Stauf’s was in my delivery area which also included the south part of The Ohio State University.

INeedCoffee and Coffee Hero contributor Ryan Jacobs still lives in Columbus.  Back in 2000, he wrote A Coffee Education in Columbus, Ohio, which took the reader around Columbus on a coffee journey.  The coffee scene has changed a lot in Columbus, so that article remains a perfect time capsule for Columbus coffee in 2000.  Home coffee roasters should note that SweetMarias.com started in Columbus, Ohio and a photo of their original sign is on page 4 of that article.
