Ninety-Four Coffee – Bangkok, Thailand

During one of my urban hikes through the streets of Bangkok, I discovered Ninety Four Coffee.  It was a Western style coffee house serving a full compliment of espresso based drinks and pastries.  Comfortable chairs and big windows.  The name Ninety Four comes from 94 degrees Celsius, which they state is the brewing temperature of coffee.
94 degrees Celsius [...]

Do Prices Include Sales Tax at Your Favorite Coffee Shop?

I like it when coffee shops include the after sales tax price on their menu.  It gives me an opportunity to get the exact amount for the order and tip while waiting in line.   Calculating some extra 1/2 cent tax usually means there is some stray penny being traded back and forth at the [...]

Starbucks VIA Instant Coffee vs Tea

Today was the official national roll out for the Starbucks VIA Instant Coffee.  I covered the taste yesterday in the post Fear of an Instant Coffee.  Since Starbucks is pushing this as an economical alternative to cafe coffee, what will the cost be?  From Starbucks unveils its instant brew on CNN Money:
Via is sold in [...]

My Last Comment on Coffee House Pricing

The Seattle Times ran a second story on coffee house pricing today that used quotes from this blog.  The story is titled Coffeehouse customers steamed about higher prices.  The point that seems to be lost from all the feedback I’ve received is that I’m not in the industry and don’t understand why prices are going up. I’m [...]

Panama Esmeralda vs Kenya Peaberry

With all the talk about pricing lately, I thought I’d share my thoughts on 2 different coffees.  My latest article on INeedCoffee is The 2 Best Cups of Coffee I’ve Ever Had.
Is it really taboo to be honest about seeking certain flavor profiles at different price points? I don’t believe there is always a direct [...]

Zoka Updates Website With Accurate Packaging Size

It appeared that Zoka Coffee no longer lists their coffee size as “per bag“.  It now states “12 oz“.  This is a nice conclusion to the post I Call Coffee Shenanigans – The 12 Ounce Pound.

I love the Espresso Paladino blend, but 12 ounces is not a pound.  Hiding that fact or stating it is [...]

Coffee, Commodities and Pricing Shenanigans

After yesterday’s link from the Seattle Times, I got an interesting comment from Luke about coffee and commodities.
The majority, if not all, of these roasters do not purchase coffee from the commodity market. Many of the roasters (notably Stumptown and Intelligentsia) on this list pay the highest (far beyond commodity prices) on average for exceptionally [...]

Fighting Back Against Coffee Inflation

Unemployment is rising.  People are saving more and spending less.  Restaurants that were once packed are now empty.  The one exception, at least here in Seattle, are coffee shops.  Coffee seems to be the one thing consumers will not cut back on during tough times.  In the past year several new coffee shops have opened [...]

Seattle Whole Bean Espresso Prices – May 2009

Seattle has many of the best coffee roasters in the world and so I’m able to pick up great espresso blends from several places.  Instead of being loyal to a single roaster, I’m always alternating the espresso blends I bring back home.
Last year during the commodity price run up, a few roasters raised their prices.  [...]
